As parents prepare to educate their children on sex, many do not realize the need to also educate them on the dangers that stem from pornography.

Opposition to porn is no longer solely a religious or moral argument. Research has shown us how porn negatively affects individuals, families, marriages and communities. Girls are not immune to this; and the problems facing them today are very real.

While we would all like to believe our children will not encounter pornography, that is simply untrue — and they need to be prepared when they do. Here are four reasons to sit down and talk with your daughter about porn:

1. Girls can become porn addicts, too

Yes, girls can become addicted to porn, too; and we are only causing harm by assuming their gender alone will keep them safe.

The internet has made porn more easily available than ever before. Once addicted, porn influences almost every aspect of a person's life; and recovery is difficult.

Having the courage to open up to others for help can be even more challenging for girls, because they are ashamed of "being a girl with a boy's problem." Numerous addiction recovery resources exist for those struggling with porn; yet many are geared toward males, and girls tend to feel awkwardly alone in their struggles.

2. She will be faced with sexual decisions

Early exposure to porn is causing teens to have sex at earlier ages.

As parents, not educating our teens about sex leads them to turn to porn. If a boy's sex education relies solely on porn, which falsely teaches that girls constantly crave sex, he may mistakenly believe the girl he is hanging out with shares the same intense desire for sexual intimacy — when in reality, she likely just wanted to go out for ice cream with the cute boy from history class. The porn culture is increasingly placing pressure on girls to comply with sexual requests from their peers. Some teen girls say they have lost their virginity, without ever experiencing their first kiss.

It is important, however, to remember that not all boys have a porn addiction. The best thing for you to do is to educate your daughter on how to handle herself in certain situations, and encourage her to hang out in groups of friends as often as possible, as opposed to one-on-one time.

3. Revenge porn does exist

Revenge porn occurs when one former sexual partner shares sexually explicit photos of the other, whether online or with friends. When this happens, it's often done to "get back" at the former partner. Other times, these photos are used to hold another person "hostage" — for example, a boyfriend might try to prevent his girlfriend from breaking up with him by threatening to post her explicit photos online for others to see.

It is obviously wrong for someone to use revenge porn. However, it does happen, and we need to make our girls aware of the dangers of taking and sharing these photos to begin with, to help prevent these dangerous situations from occurring.

While some states have begun to crack down on revenge porn, others still do not have laws against it, allowing people to publish inappropriate photos of others without consequences.

4. Her self-image is at stake

One side effect of pornography is a dampened feeling of self-worth.

Those who have watched, or do watch, porn often struggle to transition from pornography viewing to becoming involved with a real partner. Paid actors and actresses they have watched give a false vision of what human intimacy is truly supposed to be. Whether they feel their partner doesn't have a body equal to a porn star's, or lacks the experience to "perform" a desired way, the result is the same. The other partner is left feeling discouraged, alone and not good enough.

Girls should be taught to never be accepting of a boyfriend's or husband's porn use. They need to know they are beautiful and important, and that no pixels on a computer screen can change that.

Let your daughters know they can freely come to you with questions. The "sex talk" should involve more than a brief explanation of human anatomy. It is time to take a stand against pornography, and it starts within the walls of our own homes.

11 ways to survive your next Walmart shopping trip https://www.familytoday.com/family/11-ways-to-survive-your-next-walmart-shopping-trip/ Thu, 26 May 2016 12:38:08 +0000 http://www.famifi.com/oc/11-ways-to-survive-your-next-walmart-shopping-trip/ Headed to Walmart? Study these shopping tips before you go.

No matter where we go, Walmart is seemingly on every street corner. Escaping the grasps of this giant shopping center is harder than escaping your childhood small town. As much as we sometimes dread this place, we find ourselves there over and over.

Walmart does try their best to maintain quality store standards, but understaffed teams and human error inevitably lead to mistakes.

The next time you go, the following Walmart shopping tips will protect your family, bank account and sanity.

1. Always shop with a cart

Even when you think you don't need a shopping cart, grab one anyway. You can use your cart as a shield and/or weapon to place between you and an attacker if another customer starts to get a little crazy (it happens).

Also, before using, clean the cart with a sanitizing wipe. You never know what was on the last user-of-the-cart's hands.

2. Don't dress to impress

Dressing up is not recommended because you might stick out like a sore thumb.

For those who are in a relationship, the less people you attract the better. And if you're single, you probably don't want to tell your future children you met your spouse at Walmart: "Your father and I met in the Walmart pasta aisle. Then, we talked for hours while sharing a Big Mac at the store's McDonalds." (See how awful that sounds?)

Pajamas or sweaty gym clothes will work just fine.

3. Check ALL food for expiration dates

Product expiration dates can easily be forgotten among the staff's many other responsibilities. As the shelves are stocked, products don't always get properly rotated like they are supposed to. Be careful because the yogurt in your cart might have expired four months ago.

4. Elude the 5 p.m. rush hour

Whatever the product is that you think you desperately need, it's not worth the 30-minute wait in line. Come back later.

5. Don't approach shoplifters

Retail shoplifters can be harmless teenagers trying to steal a pair of $10 headphones. Other times, though, shoplifters are part of a professional retail crime gang. They often have warehouses full of stolen retail products worth thousands or millions of dollars.

While you might be tempted to play the role of citizen cop, these people can be armed and violent. Walmart's money is not worth risking your own personal safety. When you see a woman stuffing 80-dollar LEGO boxes underneath a blanket in her stroller's bottom basket, let a Walmart manager know and walk away.

6. Forget staring

Yes, a different breed of humans roam these aisles.

Sally has bright blue hair and her shirt isn't covering everything. Her buddy, dressed in all black, has a two-foot tall, purple/orange mohawk on the top of his head.

You don't want to accidentally make anyone feel bad, and staring at the wrong person can cause a heated confrontation. On the bright side, your shopping trip will help you to feel more normal.

7. Pick the right gift cards

A Walmart gift card will inevitably force one of your loved ones to make an extra Walmart trip themselves, which is an awful experience you wouldn't wish on anyone.

Thankfully, Wally World offers a variety of restaurant and retail gift cards to choose from for birthdays and other special occasions. Choose one of these instead.

8. Compare with other retailers for large purchases

Bobby's birthday is next week, and he wrote down the new Star Wars video game on his wish list. Your heart might come to a halt when you see Walmart's $59.99 price point. Thankfully, you can find the same game on Amazon for $20.

Walmart is often an ideal location for saving money but not always.

9. Don't rely solely on WSC for price matching

Walmart has an app called Walmart Savings Catcher (WSC). After a shopping trip, customers use the app to scan their receipt and Walmart uses the receipt to compare the prices of competitors. Then, the customer gets the price-matched "savings" on an e-gift card.

In theory, this app would allow you to get the best deal on every item while shopping only at Walmart, but it's not that simple. For example, Walmart only uses this price-matching method against national competitors, so they don't even bother to help you compare their prices to your locally owned grocery stores.

10. Wash hands thoroughly after shopping

You just came in contact with dozens, if not hundreds, of random strangers.

Heck, why stop at hand washing? Tossing your clothes into the washer and hopping into the hot shower is your best hope for disease prevention.

11. Avoid going at night

I know Walmart is a necessary part of life for many families, so I won't try to tell you to avoid it completely. However, if you are ever hungry for snack food at 10 p.m. on a Friday night and you have to choose between going hungry or making a trip to Walmart in the dark, I won't judge you for choosing to go hungry until morning.

15 hairstyles even worse than Donald Trump’s https://www.familytoday.com/family/15-hairstyles-even-worse-than-donald-trumps/ Fri, 20 May 2016 14:19:28 +0000 http://www.famifi.com/oc/15-hairstyles-even-worse-than-donald-trumps/ These celebs have given Trump's hair a run for its money.

Donald Trump's hair has provided endless ammunition for social media jokes. Is his hair real? Is he wearing a toupee? Thankfully, Megyn Kelly answered both of those critical questions for us all.

It's time for us to recognize, though, that Donald does not have the world's worst hairstyle.

The list of celebrities and public figures below represents just a small sample of the people who currently have or previously had worse hairstyles than Trump.

1. Britney Spears

Any celebrity hair list would be incomplete if it didn't include Britney's shaved head.

2. Jon Gruden

I'm not sure why ESPN allows Jon Gruden to go on air with this hair. He coached an NFL team to a Super Bowl victory, so he is a smart guy but just not smart enough to get rid of the part down the middle of his head.

3. Miley Cyrus

The hardest part about putting this list together was picking which one of Miley's many hairstyles was disliked the most.

4. Scarlett Johansson

If a woman as beautiful as Scarlett Johansson can't pull off the mullet, no other woman should ever try it again.

5. Kim Jong Un

Kim Jong-un fancies his own hairstyle so much that he is legally requiring North Korean men to copy it.

6. Megyn Kelly

Megyn Kelly admired Donald Trump's hair enough she decided to get her own Trump hair. I won't say Kelly's hair is any worse than Trump's, but their dos might be equals.

7. Harry Styles

Harry Styles' hair looked better when One Direction first came to the big stage. Pass the scissors, please.

8. Robert Pattinson

The bowl cut was bad enough by itself ... then Robert added a Hitler mustache.

9. Christina Aguilera

Christina once tried the fluffy-sheep look. Thankfully it wasn't permanent.

10. Kyle Beckerman

Kyle Beckerman, soccer player for Real Salt Lake and the USA National soccer team, would look like a character out of "Pirates and the Caribbean"if his hair were growing out of his face instead of his scalp. How does he wash it?

11. Mel Kiper

Covering the NFL Draft for ESPN since 1984, the network definitely doesn't put Mel on live TV for his sex appeal.

12. Nicki Minaj

I thought this photo of Nicki Minaj's poofy blue hair was pretty hilarious, but then I realized the red-haired woman next to her was also competing to get on this list.

13. Mark Davis

Mark Davis, owner of the Oakland Raiders, has offered $500 millionto go towards a new football stadium if the team moves to Las Vegas. How much is he paying for this haircut?

14. Nicholas Cage

Who knew Nicholas Cage's hair could ever be worse than his acting?

15. Gwen Stefani

Behold, a foreshadow of humanity's fashion taste in 2072, when we are traveling through space, interacting with aliens and inhabiting Mars.

Bonus: Great Clips

Ethan made a routine trip to Great Clips one day and became a haircut legend.

Bonus: Lizard hair

When your Mom won't let you get a pet lizard, this is the next best thing.

Can you think of any other terrible hairstyles? Comment below with hairstlyes you think should have make this list.

7 unconventional role models your children can actually look up to https://www.familytoday.com/family/7-unconventional-role-models-your-children-can-actually-look-up-to/ Tue, 03 May 2016 06:30:00 +0000 http://www.famifi.com/oc/7-unconventional-role-models-your-children-can-actually-look-up-to/ Struggling to find positive role models for your children? These 7 individuals will change that.

In a culture that loves to give attention to the likes of Miley Cyrus and Kanye West, parents might be easily discouraged when trying to find positive role models for their children. While many positive role models do exist, I dug deeper to find special talent that isn't included on a typical "role model list."

Each of these people have used their relentless determination and creative talents to inspire the world.

1. Lindsey Stirling

(hip-hop violinist, YouTube sensation)

Lindsey Stirling grew up playing only classical music with her violin, but as she became an adult, she put a unique spin on her sound by adding mixtures of dance, hip-hop and dubstep. Lindsey first attempted to break out on the world stage by competing in "America's Got Talent." Being eliminated from the contest was disappointing, but Lindsey did not give up her dreams.

By slowly building her name with music videos through her YouTube channel, she has become one of the world's highest paid YouTube stars. She has spoken openly about her battles with overcoming anorexia and depression, giving a voice of support to young girls who are also dealing with those issues.

2. Mason Wartman

(pizza shop owner)

Mason Wartman started a pizza shop in Philadelphia, but this shop is different from any you have ever seen before. He left his job on Wall Street to open the shop, which sells slices of pizza for $1 each.

His business uses a pay-it-forward program, where generous customers can buy a slice of pizza in advance for a different customer by hanging a sticky note on the restaurant wall. When needed, customers (often homeless people with no money) can walk in and use these sticky notes to pay for their meals. This program has given pizza to thousands in need.

3. Sadie Robertson

(actress, dancer, author, fashion designer)

Sadie Robertson is a picture-perfect example of a girl who chooses to use her popularity to inspire the lives of others, instead of using it to boost her own celebrity ego.

Sadie starred in A&E's hit series "Duck Dynasty" with her family and finished in second place on "Dancing with the Stars." She wrote a New York Times best-seller, "Live Original: How the Duck Commander Teen Keeps It Real and Stays True to Her Values." In the book, she discusses principles and values that have helped her to grow and improve her family relationships. She created a "daddy-approved" brand of prom dresses, Sadie Robertson Live Original, to give girls a modest clothing option.

4. Chris Ulmer

(special education teacher)

Immediately after meeting this young gentleman we stared into each other's eyes for ten seconds. He maintained a neutral...

Chris Ulmer is a special education teacher from Florida who has gone above and beyond the call of duty. He starts out his class each day by dishing out compliments to his students one by one.

After teaching for a couple of years, he became frustrated by a disconnect he observed between his students and the rest of the world. He tried to publish a book series about his teaching experiences but said he received 50 rejection letters.

Not giving up, he instead took to social media to document his experiences using his own time, money and resources. His program Special Books by Special Kids has touched hearts all across the Internet. He dreamed this program "would turn into a platform to educate the world" about special education, but he also is teaching us all about love and the power of human kindness.

5. Saira Blair

(teen lawmaker)

While other teenagers were partying and going to the mall with friends, Saira Blair became the United States' youngest state lawmaker. As a 17-year-old, she decided to run for office. With little funding available to her, she had to defeat experienced politicians in elections to win her current position.

She hopes her story will inspire youth all over the country to become more interested and involved with politics. Her main goal for running was to improve the communities of West Virginia that she cares so dearly about. She is studying finance at West Virginia University and doesn't have any interest in becoming a career politician.

She has received multiple death threats since entering office (due to her gender and political views), but not even those threats have been able to slow her down from helping to pass legislation.

6. Dan Reynolds

(lead singer of Imagine Dragons)

While you may have heard of the powerful music group Imagine Dragons, Dan Reynolds is not a household name. The release of their debut album "Night Visions" turned the band members into overnight rock stars. "Radioactive" broke records by staying on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for 87 straight weeks.

Overnight success did not happen overnight, though. Once Dan found his bandmates, they treated music creation like a 9-to-5 job, dedicating themselves to becoming successful musicians and playing in any small venue they could find.

Before the rock star life, Reynolds was a college dropout struggling to find his way. Soon after dropping out, he wrote the band's first hit, "It's Time." He uses his song lyrics to talk about his depression, regret for past mistakes, parents and more. He hopes his music will inspire and uplift all who listen to it.

7. Missy Franklin

(Team USA Swimmer)

Missy Franklin has won four Olympic gold medals and many World Championship medals since 2011. Missy's swimming achievements have landed her several opportunities to strike rich, but she has quietly turned away the money and fame.

She chose to experience college life and compete at the collegiate level at University of California, Berkeley, which would not be allowed by the NCAA if she accepted endorsement money. The endorsement deals she turned down were worth many millions of dollars. After winning a collegiate national championship, she has now turned professional, signing her first endorsement deal with Speedo.

The Olympic gold medalist works with Swim for MS, a group that raises funds for multiple sclerosis research through swimming fundraising events. And Missy is now training hard to compete in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics.
